The Orange Mound Community Center, located in Melrose High School, has become a home away from home for many of the community’s senior residents.
Research shows seniors who are physically active are more likely to live past the age of 90.
For instance, Tai Chi offers a way for seniors to reduce stress and it’s an ancient Chinese tradition that now used as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing.
Also knitting is another way of reducing stress and anxiety. It decreased heart rate, muscle tension and blood pressure. The center provides this for seniors to have a chance to be creative as they are relieving stress.
Aside from physical activity, the center also offers seniors a social outlet that may not otherwise be available.
“At a certain age you lose friendship and relationships as you get older,” Saine said.
